When Israel’s population reached ten million, photographer David Shlachter set out to answer a simple question: Who are the people behind the numbers?

To find out, he traveled throughout Israel, photographing and interviewing one hundred individuals whose backgrounds, identities, and life experiences reflect the country’s remarkable diversity.

The result is Hinenu, a striking collection of portraits and personal narratives that offers a rare window into contemporary Israeli society. From Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, new immigrants and native-born Israelis, young and old, each participant represents a different thread in the complex human tapestry of the nation.

All interviews and photographs were created during the October 7 war, capturing not only who Israelis are, but what it meant to live through one of the most challenging periods in the country’s history.

Accompanied by powerful photography, Hinenu invites readers to encounter Israel not as an abstraction or a political debate, but as a society of real people with distinct voices, experiences, and dreams.
