CHILTERN CLASSICS KING LEAR

CHILTERN CLASSICS KING LEAR

SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM

Penned by Shakespeare from 1604, King Lear or the Tragedy of King Lear, is a five-act drama set in the court of an aging British monarch, whose plan to step down from his throne and divide his kingdom among his daughters ends tragically.

Widowed King Lear beckons his nobles together to announce his plans to pass on the kingdom to his three daughters. Goneril, his oldest, is married to the Duke of Albany, his middle daughter, Regan, is married to the Duke of Cornwall. The youngest daughter, Cordelia has caught the eye of both the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France. It is a tragic tale of flawed leadership, betrayal, and believing flattery over genuine love.
